Michele Guieu's Painting, 'Middle East', Receives an Honorable Mention for the San Diego Art Institute Exhibition 'The Contemporary Scroll: Visual

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) August 10, 2007 -- During the summer of 2007, the San Diego Museum of Natural History is showcasing The Dead Sea Scrolls, which chronicle a period that laid the foundation of western traditions, beliefs and practices throughout the past two millennia. Drawing upon that same well of inspiration, contemporary artists are given the opportunity to engage in their own explorations of what a scroll might mean. The San Diego Art presents works inspired by this cultural heritage and this form of documentation.

Michele Guieu's "Middle East" echoes the Dead Sea Scrolls in that it speaks of the same region, but in the present time. She says: "So much is said and discussed about the Middle East, and there have been so many attempts, and so many failures, at peace."

The text contained within the painting provides a rather formal description of the region and why so many conflicts have occurred there. The viewer of this piece may recognize within the text many familiar words that come to mind when reflecting upon the region in question.

The children and women of the Middle East have paid, and continue to pay, a heavy price as a result of these conflicts. And these prices are primarily a result of the significant reserves of oil that have placed the region front and center in the world economy.

The honorable mention for the show was awarded to "Middle East", and is one of many recent awards Guieu has received for her work.

Michele Guieu lives and works in San Diego, California.
